So, I have been playing IS82 off and on for years now, and it always had a pretty small community. Lately, I see tons of people complaining about the size of it, so I was thinking of some ways to advertise IS82 and try and get some new players in to the community. I think i've narrowed down our main problems that we need to solve:
1. Battlefield 1942 is old as hell, nobody plays it anymore. If someone doesn't already have it installed (which is highly likely these days from its age) it is unlikely they're going to reinstall it for a mod that they've never heard about.
2. So many custom maps on the server that are too hard to find. Some maps you have to download from the downloads section, other maps you have to get from an IS82 map pack, and some maps are in neither location and you have to hunt for them deep in the news section (Project Slide n' Slide is a good example of this).
3. Nobody plays when the server is empty, people usually wait until someone joins before joining themself.
I think if we can fix these three issues, we can get the community flourishing again like in the days of ye olde. Here is my proposal on how we fix the above three issues:
Battlefield is old, IS82 gets no publicity We need to advertise how freaking awesome the gameplay is that IS82 offers. It is so different than any other game out and doesn't even fit in to any one specific game genre. What we need to do is make a properly good gameplay film that shows just how amazing some of these maps are and how fun exploring and racing through these giant obstacle courses can be. If we get 10-20 people in the server that are all recording from their perspective, we can definitely piece together a properly awesome video. We can all use FRAPS to record, and I can edit together all the footage. I am pretty good editor, I've dabbled in quite a bit of it. After said video is made, we can post them on all the different forums that I am sure we all visit. Everyone can play their part in spreading the video, which would hopefully get heaps of people interested and visiting the site and wanting to try out the game.
Map Availability We need to have every single one of the maps on the server available both individually and a complete full map pack. Of course we can use external sources to host these map packs, but someone should be assigned to look after all the maps and keep a proper inventory of valid download links and lists of everything that is available. The easier it is to get everything you need to play, the better. Maybe every single map can be included in 1.9? A number of times now, I have been playing with people who disconnect over a map change and don't come back because the map is not easy to find.
Not many people playing on the server The reason for this is because the way we all play IS82 is boring. We've been doing it the same way for ages. I think we should get a list together of everyone who still wants to play IS82, and divide this list in to two teams. To give you a better idea, I am talking about splitting all the players in to two different IS82 clans. After we have two teams in place, we can schedule Races where we ACTUALLY use both teams, instead of just everyone playing on one team. We can have internal IS82.com clan matches, or as I think we should call them, an IS82 Grand Prix! For example, "The IS82 Grand Prix of Ruined Vacation". This gives us things to put in the news, we can put which dates of each Grand Prix are, when they are going to happen, and also the winners of each race. This will get people playing together, and also practicing the maps to do good in the grand prix races.
We can figure out some sort of prize or title for each team depending on the races won over a certain time, similar to the world championship in Formula 1. Or maybe we can pick new teams each month? We could make up rules where there was no fighting between the two teams, or we could definitely fight. Can you imagine playing a map and defending a checkpoint? If a racer gets to a checkpoint that is currently held by the other team, he can choose to continue on, or try and cap the flag where some people could possibly be defending. The teams could have people appointed as drivers who of course drove and passengers who were repairmen and gunners who stayed at checkpoints and defended them against the other team. Or maybe these gunners could jump out somewhere on the track and hide with TNT to blow up passing cars from the other team. There are a million different rules we could do. Maybe we could make edits in IS82 1.9 to incorporate this new way of playing the mod?
EDIT: It also just dawned on me that we could finally all get together and really have a lot of fun playing the Battle Maps. Maybe after each big Grand Prix race, we could do a Battle Map afterwards to give the losing team an opportunity to make up for their loss. Something like that. I know that many hated the fact that Battle Maps were never played, so this would be a good way to play them again.
I think that if we did all of the above, we should also do a bit of a site redesign to focus more on what we actually do in the community and just make it a bit overall more welcoming to newbies.
Anyways, post your thoughts or suggestions. IS82 is so unique, we can never let it die!

I think we could easily get enough people together for an 8v8 race. Can you imagine how much fun that would be? Especially if we did it on a regular basis and filmed the matches. I think if people saw us doing this kind of stuff, they would definitely want to play. I would love to get some rivalry going within the community, it would make for a lot of action on the servers when we had the Grand Prix.

You made some very good points. Excellent idea for the team tournaments too. My schedule is wack. Some late weekend nights im home. Mon, wed's im good at 11am - 3 or 4 pm, tues, thurs, 3-5 or sometimes I get phone calls that totally change everything. So someone else schedule a play time for filming and whatnot, i'll try to make it. In the meantime i'll work on that download section that needs some updatin

I can definitely handle all the scheduling of the filming and all of that, I have many ideas already for a bunch of scenes and a basic premise of the video. It will deifnitely take some planning on my part, so for now we just need to get people interested in doing the film. We will probably need a good bit of people to make it work.
Also, maybe we could do a little auditing on the maps? It would be good to go through all of the maps and weed out the really terrible ones that nobody ever wants to play to slim down the list a little. Or maybe we could have a different "playlist" if you will of maps on the server at different times, so more maps are tried out when the more popular ones are not available?

Alright cool. Well, if anyone who reads this thread has IS82 fans on any messenger list, tell them to check out this thread. Lets get as many people who are still interested in IS82 in to this thread so we can begin to plan out how we're going to pull all of this off. I will start sharing dates of filming and more of my ideas about that once we can get 10-20 people interested.

Also, it would be useful for someone to edit some of the maps for us to use to film. For example, there are a bunch of different sections on maps that I want to film on, and it would be nice to have spawn points real close to them.

41 views and only a few replies! If you're interested in this at all, just post in the thread. The more people that are interested, the more others will show interest too.
