Very easy... Todays BIOSès has alot of settings that only has to do with overclocking. (Theyre actually built for the user to play with) U take the CPU FSB speed, also called "HT" and multiply it with something called "Multiplier factor" and the result is the CPU speed aka Ghz. ..... anyways.. something like that. Advanced overclockers even play with the amount of voltage each piece of hardware gets.
This however is a problem with branded PCs, like Dell, HP and so on. Since they seem to like to use their own type of BIOS. (Some manufactures has grown wiser tho)
So.. on a modern PC, its all in the BIOS.
Flamin - Ive just heard that AMDs Opteron CPU`s are falling up to 50% in price, very soon. So theres a chance of a cheap upgrade, if u feel its nessacery. Just look out for the Socket, if it fits. (Opterons are CPUs intended for servers - some of them are also great for overclocking - still ok for gaming)
im just wondering, i havent been here for a while etc, why did you move to australia? o_o
oh P.S inno, if you are going to OC your HP laptop you will have a hard time. they block those functions in the bios, only way i have managed to overclock my old processor is by using programs that increases the FSB Rate.
K_S_O, as far as i know only dell uses their own bios, hp uses or used a modified bios. that Phenix award winning crap or something like that.
but on my new stuff it is in the bios
i cant wait till they start sending out computers with EFI

If you overclock, it's going to get hotter, thus you need more cooling, a laptop isnt a good item to overclock.
